How to use Split PDF

  1. 1Add the PDF

Select or drop a PDF. The tool shows how many pages it has.

  2. 2Choose a mode

Extract pages into one PDF, Split into one PDF per range, Save every page as its own PDF, or Split every N pages.

  3. 3Enter pages or ranges

Type pages and ranges such as 1-3, 5, 8- (8- means page 8 to the end), or set Pages per file for the every-N mode.

  4. 4Split and download

Press Split PDF. One result downloads as a PDF; several results download together as a ZIP.

Four ways to split a PDF

Long PDFs are awkward to share. An upload portal wants only the signed page, a colleague needs chapter 3, or a scanned batch of invoices needs to become one file per invoice. This split PDF tool covers those jobs with four modes:

  1. Extract pages into one PDF – pick any pages and ranges and get a single new PDF containing just those. Example: 1, 4-6, 10 gives a five-page PDF.
  2. Split into one PDF per range – each comma-separated item becomes its own file. Example: 1-3, 4-9, 10- gives three PDFs.
  3. Save every page as its own PDF – a ten-page document becomes ten one-page PDFs, delivered as a ZIP.
  4. Split every N pages – set Pages per file (default 2). A 20-page scan of two-page forms becomes ten PDFs of two pages each.

Writing page ranges

The Pages or ranges box accepts:

  • single pages: 5
  • ranges: 2-7 (an en dash, 2–7, works too)
  • open-ended ranges: 8- means page 8 to the last page; -3 means pages 1 to 3
  • reverse ranges: 5-3 gives pages 5, 4, 3
  • lists: separate items with commas, e.g. 1-3, 5, 9-

If a page number does not exist, the tool tells you how many pages the PDF has instead of producing an empty file.

What is preserved

Pages are copied from the original document, not printed or re-rendered. Text stays selectable and searchable, images keep their resolution, page sizes and orientation stay the same, and file size is roughly proportional to the pages you keep (shared fonts and images are included in each file that uses them, so several small files can add up to more than the original).

Common uses

  • Send only what is needed. Extract the signature page of a contract, or the pages of a bank statement that cover one month.
  • Break up a scanned batch. Scanners often produce one huge PDF; Split every N pages or Split into one PDF per range separates it into individual documents.
  • Share chapters. Teachers and trainers can split a course book into weekly reading packs.
  • Reduce upload size. Many portals limit file size. Removing unneeded pages is often enough; if not, follow up with Compress PDF.

Split, then reorganise or merge

Splitting is often one step in a bigger job:

  • To reorder, rotate or delete pages visually rather than by number, use Organize PDF.
  • To combine extracted pages from several documents, split each one, then join the pieces with Merge PDF.
  • To turn pages into images for a slide deck or social post, use PDF to JPG.
  • To pull the text out of selected pages, extract them here and run PDF to Text.

File names

Results are named after the original file and the pages they contain, so report.pdf split into ranges gives files like report-pages-1-3.pdf and report-pages-4-9.pdf, and single pages like report-page-5.pdf. When there is more than one result, they are bundled in a ZIP so you can download them in one go; your operating system can extract it with a double-click.

Protected PDFs

If the PDF asks for a password to open, its pages cannot be read until it is decrypted. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF using the password you know. PDFs that only restrict printing or copying can usually be unlocked without entering a password.

Working on phones

The tool works in mobile browsers. On iPhone, the ZIP opens in the Files app; tap it to extract the PDFs. On Android, most file managers can open ZIP files, or download single results by using Extract pages into one PDF.

Privacy

Because splitting runs in your browser, it is safe for contracts, HR files, medical letters and financial statements. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract specific pages from a PDF?

Choose Extract pages into one PDF, type the pages – for example 2-4, 7 – and press Split PDF. You get one new PDF with only those pages.

How do I split a PDF into single pages?

Choose Save every page as its own PDF. Each page becomes a separate PDF and they download together in a ZIP file.

What does 8- mean?

A range with no end number runs to the last page, so 8- means page 8 to the end. A range like 5-3 extracts pages in reverse order.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied, not re-rendered, so text stays selectable and images keep their resolution.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, using the password you know.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Splitting happens in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
