From photo to line art in three styles
This photo to line drawing converter finds the important edges in a picture – the outline of a face, the shape of a dog’s ears, the windows of a house – and redraws them as clean black lines on white. You can choose between three looks:
- Line art (fine pen sketch) – delicate lines that keep texture such as fur and hair. Good for prints, tattoo stencils and sketch-style portraits.
- Colouring page (bold, clean outlines) – thicker, closed outlines with little interior texture, so children (and adults) can colour inside the lines.
- Stencil (two-tone, for cutting) – solid black and white areas, suited to spray-paint stencils, vinyl and laser cutting.
How the converter works
The image is converted to greyscale and smoothed to suppress noise. Edges are detected where brightness changes sharply, and are then thinned or thickened to the line weight you choose. Tiny fragments are removed so the drawing looks intentional rather than scratchy. Because it is classic image processing rather than a generative AI model, the drawing always follows your photo’s real shapes.
The settings
Detail controls how many edges are kept. Higher detail keeps textures such as fur, wrinkles and brickwork; lower detail gives simpler shapes and a cleaner look. For colouring pages, start low.
Line weight sets the thickness of the lines. Thin lines suit sketches; heavier lines are easier to colour and survive printing on cheap printers.
Remove specks deletes small isolated marks. Raise it when the background is noisy (carpets, leaves, grain); lower it if small features like eyes or whiskers disappear.
Also make an SVG (slower) traces the result into a vector file. The SVG scales without blurring, and it is what cutting machines and vector editors want. Untick it on slow phones if you only need the PNG.
Making a great colouring page
- Pick a photo with one clear subject – a pet on a plain floor beats a pet in a busy garden.
- Crop tightly first with Crop Image, or remove the background with Remove Background.
- Choose Colouring page, set Detail low and Remove specks high.
- Download the PNG and print with “fit to page” on A4 or US Letter. The tool reminds you of this when it finishes.
- Personalised colouring books make great party favours: run several family photos through and combine the PNGs into one printable PDF with JPG to PDF.
For crafters: Cricut, Silhouette and lasers
The SVG output imports straight into Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio. For vinyl or paper cutting, the Stencil style gives solid areas that are easier to weed than thin lines. For a cut file with weeding clean-up and real-world sizing, pass the PNG through Image to SVG for Cricut.
Laser users can engrave the line art as a vector or bitmap. Use Image to SVG for Laser to set an exact width in millimetres and export SVG or DXF.
Tips for better line drawings
- Light matters. Even, soft light gives clean edges; harsh shadows create extra lines across faces.
- Higher resolution helps fine lines, but very large photos take longer. Around 2000 px on the long side is plenty.
- Faces: keep Detail moderate so eyes and mouths remain, and raise Remove specks to clear skin texture.
- Architecture: higher Detail keeps windows and bricks; the Line art style suits it best.
Privacy
Family photos and portraits stay on your device; nothing is uploaded or stored. If you photograph other people, ask before publishing drawings of them.
Troubleshooting
- Too many lines in the background. Lower Detail, raise Remove specks, or remove the background first.
- Faces look harsh. Use the Line art style with a light Line weight and moderate Detail; retake the photo in softer light if shadows create lines across the face.
- Lines are broken. Raise Line weight one step and lower Remove specks so short segments are kept.
- The SVG is huge. Very detailed drawings contain thousands of strokes. Lower Detail or use the PNG for printing; the PNG is usually all you need for paper.
Ideas
Colouring pages of the family pet, a sketch-style portrait for a card, a stencil of a house for a moving-day gift, or line art of a wedding venue for invitations – all start with one good photo.
Frequently asked questions
What photos work best?
Sharp, well-lit photos with a clear subject and simple background. Pets, faces, cars and buildings convert well; busy scenes like crowds or forests produce cluttered lines.
How do I make a colouring page for kids?
Choose Colouring page, lower Detail so only the main outlines remain, raise Line weight a little and increase Remove specks. Print at fit to page on A4 or Letter.
Can I cut the result on a Cricut or laser?
Yes. Use the Stencil style or the SVG output. For laser cutting with exact millimetre sizes, run the PNG through Image to SVG for Laser.
Why is the SVG slow to make?
Tracing thousands of small strokes takes time on phones. Untick Also make an SVG if you only need the PNG.
Is this an AI filter?
No. It uses classic edge detection and smoothing on your device, so results are predictable and nothing is uploaded.
Can I sell colouring pages made from my photos?
If you own the photos, yes. Photos of other people, artworks or brands may need permission.
